New Features!! May 8th
I know it’s only day 2, but we’ve already added a few new features!
Although small, they are worth noting:
First, on profile pages you can now view recent activity “on you” and “by you”.
Also, within days we will be launching a “logged-in” dashboard homepage that will allow you too see an aggregated list of all your and your contacts’ activity on ScrnShots.
Second, you can now subscribe to an RSS feed of your contacts uploads. No more snooping around the site to see what your contacts are doing, you can get it right from your cozy RSS reader. To subscribe to the feed go to your profile page and click the big RSS icon beside the contacts count on the left side.
Finally, we’ve heard your pleas for desktop integration, and we want you to know that we are planning to launch it on Tuesday, May 20. If you want to have a sneak peek, check out this earlier post. More details to come soon!
After the Smoke Clears May 7th
Hey ScrnShot-ites,
Day 1 was a huge success! We are happy to welcome just under 500 new users to the ScrnShots community!
We ended off the day with just under 10,000 page views, and 720 screenshots uploaded!
We want to thank everyone who signed up and contributed yesterday. It’s really exciting for us to see people using ScrnShots!

Mac Screenshot Apps Faceoff May 5th
Although ScrnShots isn’t mentioned, The Unofficial Apple Weblog posted a review of the best screenshot tools for the Mac. Looks like Skitch is a clear victor (which isn’t surprising, its a great app).
At the office, we’ve played with each of these apps extensively (as I’m sure that many of you Mac users have also). With the release of our public API, we hope that any of these tools will be able to integrate into your workflow with ScrnShots.
Profile Page Preview May 3rd
We are happy to introduce some new features that we have added to the profile pages. They will be implemented on Tuesday, for the public release.
The first major change is the sidebar on user profile pages which now features quick access to user stats and RSS feeds. It will also be extremely easy to add users as contacts as you can see by the big “Add As Contact” button.
And the other section that we will be adding to the profile pages is the recent activity section:
The recent activity will showcase what you’ve been up to. Within the next week it will also include activity that has been done on your items. What do you think of the additions? Feedback? Thoughts?
ReadWriteWeb Reviews ScrnShots!! May 1st
I would like to thank Sarah Perez and all the folks at ReadWriteWeb, for the flattering review of ScrnShots.
Here is Sarah’s take on ScrnShots:
Scrnshots, currently in private beta, is meant to serve as a community for designers to share their screenshots of interesting or beautiful designs. However, the service, which allows you to upload shots which others can use via an embed code, has the potential to be more than just a niche community for artistic types.
At first glance, ScrnShots appears to be a takeoff on sites like FFFFOUND! or We Heart It (our coverage). Those sites let you “favorite” pictures from the web as inspiring, interesting, artistic, and so on. ScrnShots takes it a step further, encouraging you to take a screenshot of the image and then upload it to their service.
She makes a few good points about ScrnShots being more than just a “niche community” for designers. She mentions the potential use for bloggers who need a place to host screenshots that are simply not important enough to take up space on your computer. These are exactly the ways in which we would love to see ScrnShots grow; users coming up with their own uses for our system.
Sarah touches on the fact that the uploading process is simply too long: “As it is right now, screenshots have to be uploaded one-by-one, a tedious process that simply takes to long for anyone to become a heavy user of the service.”
We, here at ScrnShots have two answers for this:
- We’re working on a few uploading tools right now that should make integration with your desktop quite seemless. You can check out a video preview of the ScrnShots mac desktop application here: http://blog.scrnshots.com/2008/04/09/screencast-mac-desktop-app-preview/
- We are also going to be releasing the API to the public a few weeks after launch, which will enable developers to build their own tools to share with the community.
Once again, thank you to Sarah and ReadWriteWeb!! We really appreciate it!
Launch Date Confirmed! Apr 28th
Its official, ScrnShots.com will be launching to the public on May 6, 2008 at 10:00am PST.
The Big Question - Free?
At launch, ScrnShots.com will be completely free. Users will be able to upload unlimited screenshots to the system at no cost. On June 6, 2008 we will launch our ScrnShots PRO (paid) accounts which will include private functionality (ie: private screenshots, private groups) and unlimited screenshot uploads. At that time, basic accounts will be given a monthly cap on the number of allowed screenshot uploads. The cap will be high and won’t affect any screenshots previously uploaded to the system. Although we haven’t confirmed a final price structure for the PRO accounts, they will be inline with other image hosting services. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to express them in the comments section.
New Features
On top of what’s already on the site, we’re adding a few new features for the launch. These include:
- Contacts - This is super useful. Once you add friends as contacts, you get a feed of their screenshots directly into your profile. No more wading through pages and pages of screenshots to find your friends.
- Ratings - This will be the first iteration of our rating system. At launch, screenshots will have a five point rating that all logged in members will be able to rate them on. Of course, you’ll be able to sort your screenshots by rating and the system will surface the highest rated every week.
- Activity Feeds - Profiles and dashboards will include feeds of recent activity by you, your contacts and your screenshots.
- New Home & Explore Pages - The content on the home page and explore pages will be expanded on to feature the best screenshots on the site as well as make it easier to find/browse the screenshots that your looking for.
We’re super excited to get more users on the system and start growing the design community at ScrnShots.com.
